Understanding Polyvagal Theory

Central to my practice is the groundbreaking understanding of the polyvagal theory, which sheds light on how our autonomic nervous system (ANS) responds to life’s challenges. Unlike the traditional binary view of the ANS, polyvagal theory introduces a third response, the social engagement system.

How Does It Work?

  • Activating (Up-Regulation): Your body’s initial response to stress, often known as “fight or flight.”

  • Calming (Down-Regulation): The opposite, known as “freeze or faint,” where the body slows down under perceived threat.

  • Social Engagement System: This third response allows for a blend of activation and calming. When I feel safe, this system encourages adaptive responses that enhance social interactions and foster connection.

As Wagner (2016) emphasizes, “When I experience my environment as safe, I operate from my social engagement system.” This sense of safety allows us to experience intense emotions, process them, and move forward without the lasting effects of stress.
